On March 15, the home of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes and North Carolina State University’s men’s basketball team will become PNC Arena. The Hurricanes and PNC Bank, a member of The PNC Financial Services Group, Inc., will mark the occasion with special activities surrounding the team’s home game on March 15 against the St. Louis Blues.

On the morning of March 15, new PNC Arena in-ice logos will be unveiled prior to the Hurricanes’ 10:30 a.m. morning skate. Exterior building signage will be revealed following the team’s media availability, around 11:30 a.m. As always, the Hurricanes’ morning skate is open to fans and the media.

Prior to that evening’s game against the St. Louis Blues, fans will enjoy special on-ice projections of some of the top moments in the building’s history. During the game, promotions will focus on the building-name change, including a commemorative puck, more than 200 PNC Arena gift card giveaways and more.

The building-name change comes as PNC Bank’s acquisition of RBC Bank (USA), subject to customary closing conditions. The conversion of customer accounts and branches is scheduled for March 2-4, with branches re-opening as PNC Bank on March 5.

Leading up to the building’s name change, www.CarolinaHurricanes.com will count down the top 25 Hurricanes moments in RBC Center history, as one clip is unveiled each day, with the No. 1 moment being unveiled the morning of March 15.

The Carolina Hurricanes host the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday at the RBC Center (7 p.m., FOX Sports Carolinas HD, Hurricanes Radio Network) in the second game of a six-game home stand. Bruce Springstein, the Boss, Mr. Born in The U.S.A. is going to bring us back to the glory days for the first time in 3 years with a brand new live tour. This will also be his first tour since well know Saxophonist Clarence Clemons passed away.

The Boss announced on his website “A lot of you have been hearing that Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band will be on tour in 2012. That is absolutely correct. The European dates run from the middle of May until end of July and are being announced this week. Info on the US dates and the World tour dates will coming up shortly.” as reported by our friends over at USA Today.

BCS Selection Order: The order of selection for this year's BCS games is Fiesta,

Sugar, Orange. However, the bowls that lose host conference champions to the BCS title

game get to replace those teams before other selections are made.

Notre Dame is eligible for all bowls in which the Big East has a commitment, as well

as the BCS. It also serves as the backup for the Big 12 in the Pinstripe Bowl.

Navy will be invited to the Military Bowl if it qualifies for selection. Navy has secured

similar deals with the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl in 2012 and the Armed Forces Bowl in

2013.

Army will be invited to the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl if it qualifies for selection. Army

has secured similar arrangements with the Military Bowl in 2012 and the Poinsettia Bowl

in 2013. For the 2011 season, a 9th bowl-eligible ACC team is next in line to fill either the

BYU will be invited to the Armed Forces Bowl if it qualifies for selection. The Cougars

have secured similar arrangements with the Poinsettia Bowl in 2012 and the Kraft Fight

Hunger Bowl in 2013.

Little Caesar's Pizza Bowl gets the first pick of MAC teams in 2012, and the second

pick in 2011 and 2013. The GoDaddy.com Bowl gets the second pick in 2012, and the

first selection in 2011 and 2013.

Sun Belt teams with records of 7-5 or better are next in line to fill the Big 10's slot in the

Little Caesar's Bowl if the Big 10 does not have an eligible team. The Sun Belt is also the

first backup for any opening in the St. Petersburg Bowl, and has a secondary provisional

agreement for the BBVA Compass Bowl.

Hawaii is automatically invited to the Hawaii Bowl if it has at least 7 wins. Otherwise,

the WAC sends its 3rd-place team.

PAYOUTS: Amounts shown do not necessarily reflect what each school receives. The

conferences have different methods by which bowl money is divided among its

membership. Some bowl agreements call for higher payouts to one conference than

the other, depending on such factors as which is the "host" conference. Many of the

above payouts are reflective of past actual payouts, while others are published

estimates of anticipated payouts for the current year.

A North Carolina team of scholars takes a look at the aerodynamic and thermodynamic challenges of delivering toys, sorting out the naughty/nice list and handling the heat from all those chimneys.

Several professors in the school's Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering recently asked their students to explore the aerodynamic and thermodynamic challenges of delivering gifts to millions of children worldwide in a single night from an airborne sleigh.

The results, posted at web.ncsu.edu/abstract/tag/science-of-santa, posit that Santa Claus is a brilliant engineer and physicist.

One of the professors, Dr. Larry Silverberg, said the students concluded that Santa has expanded Einstein's theory of relativity to take advantage of "relativity clouds" that stretch time and bend the universe. "Relativity clouds are controllable domains rips in time that allow him months to deliver presents while only a few minutes pass on Earth," he said.

The site reports that his sleigh must be an advanced aerodynamic design made of honeycombed titanium alloy, capable of altered shape in flight and yet stable enough for landings on steep roofs. Laser sensors would help select the fastest route, and a porous, nano-structured skin outfitted with a low-pressure system reduces drag up to 90%, Silverberg said.

Silverberg confessed that he really didn't understand all of it, even though he's an expert in unified field theory.

"The man is a genius," Silverberg said of Santa, whom he described as "jolly, but learned."

What about figuring out who is naughty and nice? Theory: A mile-wide antenna of super-thin mesh relying on electromagnetic induction principles picks up brain waves of children around the world. Filter algorithms organize desires and behaviors, and microprocessors feed the data to an onboard sleigh guidance system.

Also, Santa must be checking kids' Facebook and Twitter accounts.

And does Santa carry all those presents in a single sleigh? Not possible, according to Silverberg.

More plausible: He creates them on-site, i.e., on each rooftop, using a reversible thermodynamic processor a sort of nano-toymaker known as the "magic sack." The carbon from chimney soot would be a common building block.

But the students theorized that he still delivers presents the old-fashioned way, climbing down chimneys, dressed in a fire-resistant halocarbon polymer suit.

Turkey Like You've Never Tasted

Traditionally Thanksgiving is a time to gather & reflect with family and friends. If you're like me, it is also a time to experiment and unveil some new dishes (or tweak some old favorites.) I think of it as the Detroit Auto Show for cooking. Maybe it's a new bread recipe, a wilted greens salad or even a shot at homemade pumpkin ravioli. This year, how about one last hurrah before storing your grill for the winter?

For a lot of folks smoking or slow roasting meat can seem a complex, daunting and time consuming task. Well, I'm here to help with two of the three obstacles. Making a smoked turkey for is not only delicious, it can be a fun activity for the family. Here's how I do mine, using a 12-14 pound turkey. Before we get started, here's a rundown of some things you'll need to make sure you have before you get started:

Gas or charcoal grill & wood chips

Extra space in your fridge or a cooler & ice sufficient to hold your bird fully submerged in brine. Prepare your brine ahead of time and let it sit in the fridge until you're ready to use it.

Brine & Bird Prep:

For the brine, place a stock pot or large pan on the stove. For every gallon (4Q) of water, add 1 cup of kosher salt & 1 cup of packed brown sugar. For a 12-14 pound turkey you'll need about 3 gallons (12Q) of water. Add some peppercorns, bay leaves, cinnamon, halved oranges, cloves; now's a good time to experiment with some of your favorite flavor combinations. Bring the pot to the boil then reduce the heat to a simmer for about 15 minutes. Remove from the heat and let cool completely to room temperature. The afternoon or evening before the day of cooking, take the turkey out of its packaging then clean and rinse it thoroughly. Save the giblets for your gravy if you'd like. Remove the pop-up thermometer now so you don't forget it later on; long slow cooking & pop-up thermos don't play well together- trust me on this. Once cleaned and the thermometer is removed, submerge the bird into the brine and replace the container into your fridge or cooler for the night. Use a kitchen brick (what, you don't have one?) or some other heavy object to help keep the bird submerged in the brine .

Grill prep:

This bird can be prepared on just about any grill big enough to hold it. Gas, charcoal, wood smoker or grilling pit in the yard (what, you don't have one of those either?) is fine also. I'm not here to tackle the gas/ wood debate, just to share with you how to make a delicious smoked turkey. My personal & business preference is wood, so I'll be describing that process. You can still achieve a good smokey flavor using charcoal or gas, just make sure you give your owner's manual a good once over so you don't void a warranty or make turkey charcoal. Start your grill per your normal operating procedures and set it to achieve a temp in the range of 250-275 degrees. While your grill is heating, start soaking your wood chips so they're ready when the grill is. Chips take about 30-40 minutes to soak, chunks take longer so plan accordingly. The choice of wood to use is almost as hotly contested as what type of grill. Just about any hardwood will work. My personal selection is a mix of pecan and hickory.

Final Bird Prep:

While the chips are soaking and the grill is heating, remove the bird from the brine and discard what's left. Give the bird a quick rinse then pat it dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture. A light coat of vegetable oil will help any additional seasonings- say cracked black pepper, granulated garlic & poultry seasoning- adhere to the bird's skin. Insert the probe of your favorite digital thermometer into the thickest part of the thigh (avoid the bone) and set the temp to 165F. Once your grill is holding 250-275F nicely, add your smoking chips according to manual's recommendations and place the bird breast side up onto your cooking surface. Cooking outdoors is very environmentally influenced, so make sure you're keeping a close eye on things while the bird is on the smoker. A rough estimate is a 12-14 pound bird will take about 3-4 hours. When your thermometer starts chirping, use a second thermometer to check the other thigh and make sure the temp is at a steady 165F. Remove the turkey from your grill and set in a pan and cover it with foil for about 15 minutes before carving to allow the meat to settle. Serve with your favorite fixins or even some of those pumpkin ravioli you've been talking yourself into trying.

Construction Phase

History and Background

North Carolina's first public park, Pullen Park, was deeded to the City of Raleigh on March 22, 1887 by Richard Stanhope Pullen. Today Pullen Park's 66 acres provide amusement and picnic opportunities, art programs, and open space. The park embodies the ideals of the nineteenth century park movement.

A main attraction of Pullen Park is the Amusement Center. Adored by generations of Raleigh's citizens, Pullen Park is the fifth oldest operating amusement park in the United States and the sixteenth oldest in the world. The Amusement Center features a 1911 Dentzel Carousel, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Another feature operating in the center is the C.P. Huntington miniature train, a one-third size, near-replica of the famous locomotive of the same name.

A revised Master Plan for Pullen Park was adopted by City Council on October 21, 2001 based on recommendation from the Pullen Park Master Plan Committee. The committee laid out goals and priorities for the 66 acre park including specific goals for the Amusement Center. One specific goal was to provide a welcoming and exciting carousel house that is able to provide a longer period of use during the year.

In 2003, working from the Pullen Park and Chavis Park Master Plans, the Carousel Task Force Committee set out to create a thorough and well balanced report. The report, adopted in 2004, provides a framework for decisions regarding carousel restoration, maintenance, promotion, fundraising, operational programming, location, and potentially new development by the City of Raleigh and the Parks and Recreation Department.

With the carousel house as its centerpiece, the Raleigh City Council authorized the Design Development Phase to plan for improvements to the carousel, carousel house, and related park facilities in 2005. During the Design Development Phase a series of public meetings and presentations were held to gather citizen input. A Public Workshop for Pullen Park Playspace was held in November 2005 at the Pullen Arts Center and a formal Public Presentation was provided in March 2006 to review and collect comment on preliminary design drawings.

On March 17, 2009, the Raleigh City Council approved moving forward from the Design Development Phase to the Construction Document Phase for the Amusement Center Renovations. Resolute Building Company of Chapel Hill was awarded the construction contract by City Council on September 7, 2010. Construction began on October 11, 2010 and is expected to conclude late fall 2011. The adopted Pullen Park Master Plan and the Carousel Task Force Report have provided the background and guiding principles for the Design Development process and will continue into the Construction Document Phase.

On December 14, 2009, Pullen Park Amusement Center, including all of the amusement area features - Lake Howell, the paddle boats, the Andy & Opie statue, the carousel, the kiddie boats, the minature train, the concessions, the red caboose, and the playgrounds, was closed to the public Pullen Arts, the Aquatic Center and all of the features in North Pullen Park (north of the train tracks) remain open.

During construction please do visit Chavis Community Center and Park located just 2.1 miles east on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Note that the Chavis Carousel is closed for the season. It is currently undergoing renovations and will return to Chavis Park in a new Carousel House in the Fall of 2012.

Roger Waters, the co-founder and principal songwriter of the archetypal progressive band Pink Floyd, has announced the return of the historic production of “The Wall” to North America in 2012. His aural and visual masterpiece of alienation and transformation will be performed in-its-entirety featuring a full band and state-of-the-art production. “The Wall” live has played more than 120 shows around the world for more than 1.6 million fans making it one of the most successful tours of 2010 and 2011.

The 2012 tour will begin on May 1st in Houston, Texas at the Toyota Center making a 36 show trek throughout North America, including several outdoor stadium performances with state of the art modifications transforming the arena production into magnificent outdoor events. The tour, promoted by Live Nation, includes stadium stops in San Francisco at AT&T Park on May 11, Vancouver at BC Place on May 26, Chicago’s Wrigley Field on June 8, Toronto at Rogers Centre on June 23 and Philadelphia at the Citizens Bank Park on July 14.

NCSU vs UNC - At look at the last 10 Football Games

As we get closer to Saturday's game against UNC-Chapel Hill, let's first take a step back and look back at some of the previous games in the rivalry. The rivalry stands with UNC-Chapel Hill having a 63-31-6 overall record against the Wolfpack. Now, all Wal-Mart fans will let you know that this is all that needs to be said. What most people, and let's get real, all Wal-Mart fans, don't know or care to know is that before the ACC was formed in 1953, NC State did not fully fund the football team. They would play a majority of games on the road and obviously this would make State's record worse than it probably should be. For example, from the beginning of World War II in 1939 until the formation of the ACC in 1953, State played UNC-Chapel Hill a total of 11 times, with 9 of them being in played in Chapel Hill. Since the ACC was created, the record in the series has UNC-Chapel Hill up 32-26 (thanks Mike O'Cain). In the 21st century, NC State has a 7-4 advantage in the series.

Let's look at the last ten games of the series.

2001: Raleigh. UNC 17, NC State 9. This was the first home game after 9/11. Emotions ran high and the pregame ceremonies were very poignant. On the field, Philip Rivers could not get much going on during the game and was beaten by Darian Durant in a close game. The one indelible image is Dovonte Edwards running a post route to score the Wolfpack's only TD of the day. After he scored, he ran right into the goal post and fell down. He truly ran a post route there.

2002: Chapel Hill. NC State 34, UNC 17. This was a close game with I think UNC leading 17-7 in the second half. But the Pack started to wear down the UNC defense and gave all Wolfpack fans a great memory with Dantonio Burnette recovering a fumble on the UNC 4 after State had cut the score to 17-14. In the 4th quarter, TA McLendon and Josh Brown ran roughshod over the UNC defense as State wound up doubling the score on the Tar Heels.

2003: Raleigh. NC State 47, UNC 34. This was simply the Philip Rivers to Jericho Cotchery show. An offensive shootout was the name of the day. Rivers led the Wolfpack to an early 21-3 lead and they never looked back. Any doubt in the outcome was erased on the first play of the second half when Cotchery, who wound up with 9 receptions for 217 yards, scored on a long TD pass from Rivers. The final score was not nearly indicative of how bad State destroyed UNC. One of my favorite plays from this game was watching Rivers score a running TD by plowing up, over, and through Dexter Reid.

2004: Chapel Hill. UNC 30, NC State 24. The TA fumble game. Nothing more needs to be said except, IT WAS A TOUCHDOWN.

2005: Raleigh. UNC 31, NC State 24. This game was held early in the season before the emergence of Andre Brown. I remember Barrington Edwards running for something like 60 yards on the second play of the game. Talk about a bad omen, even with Toney Baker scoring 2 TDs. State was up 24-14 5 minutes into the second half but self-destructed on both sides of the ball and allowed Matt Baker to lead his team to the game's final 17 points.

2006: Chapel Hill. UNC 23, NC State 9. This was the last game for both Chuck Amato and John Bunting as head coaches. Bunting had already been fired and Amato knew he probably had to beat both UNC and ECU to keep his job. He lost both and then a few days later, lost his job.

2007: Raleigh. NC State 31, UNC 27. The first matchup between Tom O'Brien and Butch Davis was the best game between the two teams, from a perspective of both teams playing well. Jamelle Eugene lead the Pack with 159 yards rushing and 3 TDs, including the game winning 1 yard touchdown run with less than 2 minutes to go. The defense then shut down TJ Yates (not for the last time in the rivalry) at the end of the game to preserve the victory.

2008: Chapel Hill. NC State 41, UNC 10. This was a total demolition by the Wolfpack. UNC had 6 turnovers on the day. The biggest one was on a kickoff in the 3rd quarter after the Wolfpack had scored to make it a 24-10 lead. The very next play, Russell Wilson threw a 21 yard pass to Owen Spencer for a TD which made it a 31-10 game and basically finished any thoughts of UNC coming back.

2009: Raleigh. NC State 28, UNC 27. Wilson threw 4 TDs in a game that the Wolfpack won where they were helped by the stupidity of the UNC players. The Tar Heels were hit with numerous personal fouls and other dumb penalties that kept the Wolfpack in the game. State, down 24-14 at the half, came back behind two beautiful passes from Wilson to Spencer and a defense that bent but didn't break, holding UNC to a single field goal in the second half.

2010: Chapel Hill. NC State 29, UNC 25. This one is remembered for multiple reasons. The two yard Hail Mary on 4th down by Wilson that was caught by Spencer (notice a trend in the TD passes). The punch that was thrown after the play by Kevin Reddick (how he wasn't suspended by the ACC still confounds me except that ex-UNC AD Swofford is the ACC commissioner). The 87 yard punt return TD by TJ Graham. And the sack by Terrell Manning on Yates for a safety at the end of the game to give State the cushion for the win.

So there is your quick reminder of the past 10 games in the rivalry. What will happen on Saturday? State is going for its first ever 3 game winning streak over UNC in Raleigh. Mike Glennon is itching to add his name to the list of quarterbacks who lead the Wolfpack over UNC. Now the idiotic comments by Everette Withers followed by the strong rebuttal of Tom O'Brien has stoked the fires to a fever pitch. One thing is for sure everyone will be ready for kickoff on Saturday at 12:30.

Veteran’s Day is soon approaching and there are many restaurants and companies who want to thank our veterans by providing them with discounts or a free meal. To those companies offering veterans a free meal or discount, the military community gives a collective thanks!

Our goal is to share as many of these free meals and discounts with our military veterans and we will update this page as soon as new information becomes available.

2011 Veteran’s Day Free Meals and Discounts

Two notes before jumping in:

Proof of Military Service. First, most companies require some form of military ID – including a U.S. Uniform Services ID Card (active/reserve/retired), Current Leave and Earnings Statement (LES), Photograph in uniform, be wearing uniform (if your service permits), Veterans Organization Card (e.g., American Legion and VFW), DD214, discharge paperwork, or other form of identification. Other restaurants and companies may only require a photo of you in uniform, or go by the honor system.
Participation. Second, always call ahead to verify locations, times, and participation. Many of the listed companies are franchises and may have different policies. We will do our best to keep this page updated as we find new info.

2011 Free Veterans Day Meals

Anheuser-Busch Parks. Anheuser-Busch Parks offers Active Duty Service Members free admission for them and up to 3 dependents to any of their parks once a year. The Here’s to the Heroes program is only available to Any active duty, activated or drilling reservist, or National Guardsman. Fee Free Day at National Parks. To honor America’s service men and women, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced that areas managed by the National Park Service would not charge entrance fees for Veteran’s Day weekend – November 11-13, 2011. Over 100 national Parks will be participating in this event.

It is October and that means it is time for one of my favorite Fall events which is the North Carolina State Fair in Raleigh.

The North Carolina State Fair is the largest 11-day event in North Carolina, attracting more than 800,000 attendees. The Fair host many diverse musical acts, numerous food vendors, games booths and carnival rides, commercial and agricultural exhibitors. The Fair is managed and produced by the N.C. Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services and is consistently ranked among the top 25 fairs in North America.

2011 N.C. State Fair, October 13-23. This year's theme is Love a Fair ! Midway provider is Powers Great American Midways. There are many reasons people from across North Carolina make an annual trip to the N.C. State Fair. Squealing, speed-racing pigs. Giant, blue-ribbon pumpkins. Old-fashioned Ferris wheel rides. And, of course, deep-fried food on a stick.

Beyond the bright lights of the Midway, however, the N.C. State Fair has focused on celebrating our state's agricultural heritage. In 1853, the State Agricultural Society held the first State Fair; it was four days long and the largest attendance day had 4,000 fairgoers. Though the first N.C. State Fair took place 158 years ago, the 2011 Fair will actually only be the 144th staging of the event. Over the past 158 years, the State Fair has endured a few hiatuses because of the Civil War, World War II and changes in operators. For example, after the State Agricultural Society disbanded in 1925 the fair wasn't held in 1926 or 1927. The Fair was placed under the control of the Department of Agriculture in 1928 and moved to its present site at the State Fairgrounds in Raleigh.

Today, the State Fair has become a traditional fall-time event that aims to educate all North Carolinians about the importance of agriculture to our heritage and our economy. Our mission is to showcase and promote the state's agriculture, agribusiness, arts, crafts and culture through the annual agricultural fair. The Fair offers the agricultural community a venue to showcase its crops, livestock and new technology. The Fair is also an opportunity for the state's ever-increasing urban population to learn about agriculture through educational and competitive exhibits in the areas of livestock, horticulture, cooking, folk art and much more. More than $600,000 in prize money is awarded each year to competitive exhibitors.

The NC State Fairgrounds complex consists of 344 acres of land. The developed portion has multi-purpose building space ranging from 2,500 to 100,000 square feet (a total of 398,000 square feet of enclosed space), as well as full service RV overnight access, and numerous unique grounds areas which are available for private and public events. The Fairgrounds is also home of the state's largest indoor flea market, the Raleigh Flea Market which operates every Saturday and Sunday except during the month of October due to the State Fair. From sporting event to trade shows, wedding receptions to camping facilities, the N.C. State Fairgrounds hosts a wide variety of events, conferences and exhibits every year. Because of the roomy facilities, great location in west Raleigh, excellent on-site parking and award-winning landscape, the Fairgrounds is a popular rental spot. Of the more than 400 public and private events produced year round at a State Fair facility, several have attendance exceeding 20,000 per event. First Thing Every Morning If you had a bank that credited your account each morning with $86,400 - with no balance carried from day to day - what would you do? Well, you do have such a bank...time. Every morning it credits you with 86,400 seconds. Every night it rules off as "lost" whatever you have failed to use toward good purposes. It carries over no balances and allows no overdrafts. You can't hoard it, save it, store it, loan it or invest it. You can only use it - time. Here's a story that drives the point home. Arthur Berry was described by Time as "the slickest second-story man in the East," truly one of the most famous jewel thieves of all times. In his years of crime, he committed as many as 150 burglaries and stole jewels valued between $5 and $10 million. He seldom robbed from anyone not listed in the Social Register and often did his work in a tuxedo. On an occasion or two, when caught in the act of a crime by a victim, he charmed his way out of being reported to the police. Like most people who engage in a life of crime, he was eventually caught, convicted and served 25 years in prison for his crimes. Following his release, he worked as a counterman in a roadside restaurant on the East Coast for $50 a week. A newspaper reporter found him and interviewed him about his life. After telling about the thrilling episodes of his life he came to the conclusion of the interview saying, "I am not good at morals. But early in my life I was intelligent and clever, and I got along well with people. I think I could have made something of my life, but I didn't. So when you write the story of my life, when you tell people about all the burglaries, don't leave out the biggest one of all... Don't just tell them I robbed Jesse Livermore, the Wall Street baron or the cousin of the king of England. You tell them Arthur Berry robbed Arthur Berry." Here are six terrific truths about time: First: Nobody can manage time. But you can manage those things that take up your time. Second: Time is expensive. As a matter of fact, 80 percent of our day is spent on those things or those people that only bring us two percent of our results. Third: Time is perishable. It cannot be saved for later use. Fourth: Time is measurable. Everybody has the same amount of time...pauper or king. It is not how much time you have; it is how much you use. Fifth: Time is irreplaceable. We never make back time once it is gone. Sixth: Time is a priority.
